What You Need to Know About Roof Replacement

Blog

Roof replacement within the home renovation workflow is job number one. Each home remodelling task you decide to do will be ruined if you do not use a good roof to protect it. To understand roof replacement better, you will need to know what is involved:

Types Of Materials

Your locality as well as your personal taste will determine the choice of roofing materials you use. Some of the materials include:

  • Rubber slate (Faux slate) – recycled synthetics (post-industrial) gaining in popularity
  • Slate roofing – high-end, highly attractive roofing option; it is extremely slippery to walk on
  • Metal roofing – it is rare and few roofers know how to install it properly. Special companies may be required for this job
  • Wood shake – attractive but pricey shingle
  • Asphalt composition shingles – easily obtainable and cheap. However it is less attractive than other options due to their 'flat-like' appearance

Cost And Terminology

As you might imagine, the cost of replacing a roof varies. It varies depending on the roofing materials you want to use, the steepness (pitch) of your roof, the roofing contractor, area to be covered and other factors. Generally, the cost will be about $5,000 or more. It is hard for the roof replacement of an entire house to cost less. The cost is negotiable due to many factors, meaning you should ensure you get the best price.

Apart from the cost, there are some terminologies you should be familiar with:

  • Composition – in roofing it is commonly used to refer to asphalt shingles
  • Vent – it runs along the roof's ridge to expel trapped heat and vapour to make sure the roofing does not deteriorate and buckle over time
  • Square – is a measuring unit that is equal to 100 square feet

Process

Usually, a moderately sized, professionally installed roof replacement job may take about 3 - 4 days. The process begins by removing all existing shingles. Minor repairs are then made on the areas of the roof that are in good condition while the other areas are discarded. Ice dam protection installation follows after replacement. This is a barrier made of synthetic materials that prevents backed up ice in the gutter.

The next step is laying asphalt paper and application of shingles. Shingles are applied at the eaves working upward. Flashing is then applied to any area that leaks might use to get into the house. The last thing to be installed is the ridge vent.

Roofs: Repair, Re-shingle, Replace and Other Roofing Ideas

Hi and welcome to my blog. My name is Jules, and several years ago, I bought an old house. As it needed so many repairs, we learned to compromise and prioritise our goals. That included the roof. Although the house needed a roof, we spent a few years working on other elements of the house, and during that time, we repaired and patched parts of the roof or added shingles as needed. Finally, we were able to replace the entire thing. I learned a lot through the process and wanted to create a blog about it. If you are interested in anything to do with roofs, please check out my posts.
